The popular saying is that slippers originated in the Meiji era in Japan. In fact, slippers originated in India earlier.
Zhou qufei, an official who became an official in Guangxi in the Southern Song Dynasty, recorded two kinds of leather slippers worn by the local Jiaozhi people: one is based on leather, with an inch long column with bone flowers in the middle, which is clamped with toes to walk, and the other is placed on the leather bottom with cross red leather to walk with feet.
Besides, the shape as like as two peas in the painting were the same. Zhou qufei also describes the red slippers worn by the ancient Linguo people in southern India, which are the same as those worn by the arhat in the painting.
